Desk Transformed into Pet Station

When my parents were moving out of their home in New Jersey, I snagged this desk off them. It used to be my grandfathers! It's still structurally sound and I knew that it would be the perfect size as a console/buffet table in our dining room. Here is what it looked like:

I cleaned it up and then primed and painted it a nice bright white. Instead of painting the whole thing white, I left the top and a stripe across the drawer as the original wood finish. I then took the original knobs from my Dresser Reveal and repurposed them on this desk. I went for the dual knob look; a little unique but I like it. I wanted to take advantage of all the empty space under the desk so I sewed a quick curtain to hide clutter. The side panels are stapled to the desk and the center panels are on tension rods so they can slid back and forth for easy access. They can all be easily removed to throw in the wash if necessary. For the fabric, I chose a subtle toile pattern in beige tones. I didn't want something that was overly bright and loud, pattern-wise because I didn't want it to consume the tiny room. I also think the little people's facial expressions are pretty humorous!

We are currently utilizing this piece as a pet station! The cats eat on top so that the dog doesn't eat their food. We store treats in the drawer and in mason jars along the top. Behind the curtain we have cat toys but there is room for plenty more! I think eventually the dog food will go under there too. It also hides our electric outlet.

Eventually we might do something about the dual floors... Yes; we have two different types of flooring in one room. I was also thinking about adding a white shelf above the pet station to store the mason jars and to free up some surface space... The list of things to do is never ending!

You can also check out how I used the extra fabric to hide some clutter, here!

  3. I love the expression on your dog's face! He doesn't look very happy with your decision :)

The skirt looks really pretty and is a great way to hide the food. I like the idea of a shelf for the mason jars.

    Great project!
